it takes a team

February 6, 2025 by Tina Leave a Comment

Have you ever heard the expression….it takes a village? When you have a special needs child….it takes a team. An entire team, made up of a case worker, the current classroom teacher, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, her 1:1 aide, a physical therapist and YOU. The parent.

Today. I was her voice. I had to be strong. For her.

For the past four years, we have taken Emily’s schooling….one year at a time. We were never quite sure what she would be capable of. We have been fortunate so far to have an amazing team of people that have always made sure Emily got what she needed as far as school & therapies.

The time has come in our lives to ask that our district consider an Out-of-District placement for Emily in order to meet her unique needs. I made it very clear that we appreciated each and every one of them….. but that we feel the best learning environment for our daughter would be in a Life Skills school. One that focuses on communication, socialization & independence.

And so the process starts…….. {stay tuned}

first grade

September 7, 2024 by Tina Leave a Comment

Today was the beginning of first grade for Emily. When I told her last night she was going to school she seemed pretty excited.

And sometimes when you aren’t sure whether she understands what you are saying…..she does things like handing you the Barney Let’s Go To School DVD when she wakes up.

So we packed up the lunchbox, filled up her bookbag with essentials & out the door we went.

And we waited.

And we sang The Wheels on the Bus.

And we waited.

We danced in the driveway.

And waited some more.

Bus????? Where are you?

I ended up jumping in the car and driving Emily over to the school where she was greeted by some familiar faces & some brand new faces. I’m still not sure that bus ever drove past here.
PS. She may never read this but I want to thank Miss Teresa for comforting my little Pooh when I drove away and she started to get upset. It’s people like you in this world that make me feel like my little girl is safe when she’s at school.

June 13, 2024 by Tina Leave a Comment

Two more days and Emily will be finished with Kindergarten and moving on to 1st grade. PDD. Steps are still a work in progress for her but she tries keeps trying. Every day.

Some days seem to be harder for her than others…….and that’s when she gets a mommy lift to the top. Weeeeee.
Bye Emily…..have FUN at school today! I’ll be here waiting when you get back.
