hour glass quilt

With a love of quilting and a crafty to-do list a million miles long, its sometimes nice to have a few quick & easy GO TO projects like this one. Let’s make an hourglass quilt together…..

Fabric Used:

3 Moda charm packs or {126} 5″ squares

{9} 21½” x 2½” strips for sashing - fabric A

{4} 48½” x 2½” strips for sashing - fabric B

{14} 4.75″ x 2½” rectangles - fabric C

{2} 40″ x 2½” strips for sashing - fabric D

{5} 2½” x WOF strips for binding & 1½ yards for backing

After gathering your fabric, let’s cut some half-square triangles (HST) with our Sizzix fabi machine using all of our 5″ charm squares. Create your Sizzix sandwich with your cutting pads, your Sizzix Bigz Die - Half-Square Triangles, up to 8 layers of charm squares and roll them through your fabi machine. Wait until you see how fast you can cut your pieces.

The Sizzie die cuts your fabric so precise that you don’t even need to trim your squares after they are sewn together. #itsheavenly

Using a light/dark color combo … have fun laying out your HST’s to create your hour glass blocks, then chain piece them together. Press after stitching.

No trimming necessary. Thank you Sizzix.

You will first need to sew together 5 hour glass blocks in a row to create your strip unit. Repeat until you have 8 rows.

Note: We are going to add some sashing in between the rows and along the sides..

Sew your fabric A sashing strips in between each of your 8 hour glass rows and then add 2 fabric B strips to each side of your center unit.

Sew your fabric C rectangles to your remaining hour glass blocks to create 2 strips. See diagram.

Stitch the strips to each side of your quilt top.

Stitch your remaining sashing fabric B to the left and ride hand side of your quilt top and fabric D sashing to the top and bottom.

This is a smaller size quilt finishing at approx. 41″ x 54″, but if you want to make a larger quilt…. just increase the number of charms you cut so you end up with more hour glass blocks. You will also increase the length of your sashing to accomodate more squares.
