layer cake checkmate

August 3, 2024 by Tina 1 Comment

How fun is it when you can take one or two layer cakes and make a quilt in one afternoon?

Truth be told …. you just can’t go wrong with precuts. You also can’t go wrong with this free layer cake quilt pattern from The Fat Quarter Shop called Layer Cake Checkmate.

With two layer cakes of Hometown Girl by Pat Sloan, a little extra yardage for borders, backing & binding, one of my quilty kitty helpers, and a FQS video tutorial …. I had this quilt top finished in no time.

You can download your free pattern over at the Jolly Jabber or from the link in their You Tube video tutorial.

Now all you need to do is figure out which layer cakes you will use! Happy Quilting friends and don’t forget to stop by and check out some Layer Cake Checkmate inspiration from the FQS blogging crew.

Star Cakes Quilt - Shortcut Quilt Series

January 14, 2025 by Tina 3 Comments

Fat Quarter Shop’s Top 10 Videos of 2015 and we are nearing the end with #9 in the series with the Star Cakes quilt.

While pulling some of my favorite reds, navys, aquas & grays ….. I decided to make a star cakes table topper that will be fun to bring out in July when are are doing some patriotic decorating.

Note: The pattern says crib quilt …. but it’s also the perfect size for a table topper.

What a terrific opportunity to do a little seasonal sewing ahead of time. Right?

You can get started by downloading the Star Cakes pattern, here. And if you are more of a visual type person you can also watch Kimberly’s tutorial on piecing the Star Cakes quilt.

Don’t forget to be creative. You could change these colors to reds & greens for a super fun Christmas themed quilt too.

Thanks a bunch for stopping by for a little Star Cakes inspiration as we look back at some of the best Fat Quarter Shop videos of 2015. Don’t forget to stop by and visit these talented gals for more Star Cakes inspiration. xoxo Tina

Charm Box Quilt - Shortcut Quilt Series

January 4, 2025 by Tina 1 Comment

Hello and welcome to Emily’ Ann’s Kloset. Today we are celebrating the Fat Quarter Shop’s Top Ten Videos of 2015.

The Charm Box Quilt …. number one on the Top 10 list and one of my favorites to make.

It’s such a fun way to showcase two of your favorite charm pack precuts or you can even use some of your scraps. You can download the free pattern, here.

And since Valentine’s day is next month, I usedthe new Lil’ Red fabric and will save this for Emily.

One of my sweet & talented quilty friends Jessica @craftycop knew I was working on this project and surprised me with a beautiful coordinating dresden panel so I could make a matching pillow too.

“Oh no! Grandmother what big teeth you have! But I love your dress.”

We all love making homemade things for our friends & family ….. and as crafters we know that things like this will take time. But once in awhile it’s nice to have a quilt project that doesn’t take as long to finish.

If you haven’t made one yet, you can get started by downloading the free pattern right here and watching Kimberly’s video tutorial for step by step instructions.

Thank you Fat Quarter Shop for putting together your Shortcut Quilt Series for all of us.
